Liturgy Corner: The Revised Roman Missal

What is the Roman Missal?
The Roman Missal is the ritual text for the celebration of Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. It is written in Latin under the title of Missale Romanum. The text is then translated into the
native language of each people or nation for use in local churches. The use of a common book ensures that we are all in unity with the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world.

What is found in the Roman Missal?
The Roman Missal contains the following:
1. The GIRM – The General Instruction of the Roman Missal. This document provides details and guidelines on how the Mass is celebrated.
2. RUBRICS – The Rubrics are instructions or directions to the priest, ministers and people on what to do at each specific part in the Mass. They are called rubrics because they are
presented in red ink; the word ‘rubric’ is the Latin for ‘red’.
3. TEXT – This includes all the prayers and responses spoken during Mass – everything found in the Sacramentary and the Lectionary.

Is the Roman Missal the large red book currently used by the priest on the altar?
Not quite. Let’s explain:
1. The red book that we use at the moment is called a Sacramentary. It contains all the prayers of the Mass – those prayed by the priest and those prayed by the assembly.
2. The Lectionary is the large book which contains all the scriptural readings of the Mass, including the First and Second Reading, the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel.

There are two editions of the Lectionary – the Sunday edition (which is red), and the weekday edition (which is green). The Sacramentary and the Lectionary make up the text portion of the
Roman Missal.

Lighthouse CDs

There are 16 new titles to choose from on the rack at the entrance of the church. There is also a new catalogue available by the CD rack with more detailed descriptions of all of the available CDs should you wish to special order additional titles. If you do see a title that you want, please contact the office (653-6838 or office@holytrinitysj.com) with your request.

Religious Education

We are required to have baptism certificates on file for ALL Religious Education students (both new and returning) in the fall. If your child will be attending our Religious Education program in September, and you have not provided us with a baptism certificate in previous years, we ask that you do one of the following.

1. If your child was baptized here at Holy Trinity, please call the office (653-6838) and leave your child’s name and date of birth on our voice mail. You can also email the same information.
2. If your child was baptized in another parish, please contact that church directly and ask them to fax your child’s baptism certificate to us at 653-6848.

We would like to thank parents in advance for their assistance.

Committee Members Wanted

Holy Trinity’s Property & Finance Committee is looking for a couple of new people with experience in building and property maintenance or construction to sit on the committee. If you are interested, please speak to Fr. Stephen (653-6842).

Postal Disruption

In the event that the Canada Post labour dispute continues and you need to send any correspondence to the church you are welcome to drop by the office during regular office hours (Family Centre entrance – please knock). If you can’t make it to the church during office hours, you may also drop any documents into the mail slot located on the front door of the rectory. If it is more convenient, you may also drop any documents off at St. Joachim’s. There is a black mailbox on the wall just around the corner from the parish office (located in the upper parking lot as you are going into the main entrance of the church). As always, you may also send bulletin announcements, Mass requests and other inquiries to the parish via email (office@holytrinitysj.com).
